About APA 2007
Special Conference Exhibit: 20/20 Visions - Philadelphia Plans for the Future

In celebration of the thousands of planners from around the nation attending the APA conference in Philadelphia the Local Host Committee and Design Philadelphia, with support from the William Penn Foundation, have produced a one-of-kind exhibition that illustrates the variety, depth, and breadth of large scale planning projects occurring in Philadelphia.

Appealing to design professionals, policy makers and lay audiences alike 20/20 Visions - Philadelphia Plans for the Future uses maps, diagrams, photography and narrative text to showcase several planning strategies underway in Philadelphia.

As visitors enter the exhibit space, they step onto a map outlining the geography of Philadelphia, and allow visitors to walk over the city, and appreciate its size and scale. Visitors encounter eight specific precincts and neighborhoods, and at each are greeted by exhibitory that displays the plan specific for that environment, including:

  • a bold plan to revitalize Fairmount Park,
  • the massive redevelopment of the Philadelphia Navy Yard,
  • the renaissance on the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers',
  • the University of Pennsylvania's historic expansion into 24 acres or industrial land,
  • urban design improvements to Center City,
  • the extension of Avenue of the Arts cultural district.

Individually, each plan is a testament to sound planning, creative land use, and innovative design strategies. Curated together as an exhibition elevates these evocative plans as illustrative of a bold vision Philadelphia has for the 21st Century, and how the region is poised to shape its landscape and manage its environment for years to come.

The exhibit is open April 14-18 in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, adjacent to the activities associated with the conference, and is free of charge to all APA attendees.
